Growing up homeschooled gave me a lot of time to myself to explore creativity - teaching myself photography through self portraits in the woods as a 14 year old, investing my time into learning about lighting and posing instead of studying for tests with my friends who were in high school.
At 18, I moved away from the woods I learned photography in to attend The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and get my bachelors in fine art photography.
And yeah, art school is pretty much how they show it in the movies (lots of blue hair, coffee, and angst).
