Erika Roa is a lifestyle & documentary family photographer that specializes in authentic portraiture both in home and on location. A very sincere thank you to everyone who worked with me during since opening my doors in 2013. During the summer of 2020 my family and I relocated to Virginia. While I am eager to get back to business photographing clients, reopening in a new market mid-pandemic is not the right move for myself of my family.

Because you don't need matching outfits, a well rehearsed camera smile or an elaborate stylized set of props to create beautiful family images. You are enough. Life is enough. And I firmly believe that as the days pass into years the things we will want to reflect on most are the less glamorous moments of our lives; having dinner as a family, giving the baby a bath, the kids climbing the rocks at their favorite beach, and the perpetual organized chaos at home.

Today sessions are a unique opportunity for me to dig a little deeper and capture your family in it's most awesome and authentic form.

I am a Midwestern girl with a little case of wanderlust and a big appetite.
I have had caprese in Italy, blutwurst in Germany, and piscos in Peru.
I have lived on both coasts as well as a couple of places in between.
In my opinion, people are like goldfish; if they are kept in a small bowl, their growth will be limited.
As a little fish in a big world I listen, observe, and explore as much as I possibly can.
My husband and I were lucky enough to meet in high school.
We have embarked on many adventures, both large and small, in our 14 years together.
Let's be honest.
No one wants to get dressed up in clothes they feel totally awkward in and stand still while plastering a smile on their face.
And frankly, I know down the road, the photos that I will repeatedly stop and reflect on are not the perfect formal portraits.
They will be the images of my family interacting and showing off their personalities in our home or at one of our favorite personal spots.
So I do things a little differently.
Think of this less as a photo session and more as a creation of a time capsule or an illustrated chapter in your family history.
Photography is hard.
It is equal parts technical and creative; following rules and breaking them.
Although there is a wealth of information online, the number of voices passing along their opinions & experiences can be overwhelming, which can leave you feeling more confused than when you started.
I'll be there to help give you a push, hold you accountable, and answer any questions by email & video chat (or in person on occasion, if you are local).
Whether you need to talk through your visual voice, get a personal project off the ground, or if you are struggling with with shooting and post processing, I will be your resource.
